Beyond Basics
Beyond Basics is a three week seminar offered through the DAY Programs Office for those students who have had more than one encounter with the university discipline system (Residence Life or Conflict Resolution & Student Conduct Services). This workshop reviews patterns that have caused negative consequences and guide students to choices that result in success. Students often have patterns of heavy drinking or drug use they see as acceptable while holding false beliefs about alcohol/drug’s effects or actual substance-use norms. Beyond Basics is designed to help students make better decisions about substance abuse. The program's style is empathetic, not confrontational or judgmental, and seeks to:
- reduce alcohol consumption and its adverse consequences
- promote healthier choices among young adults
- provide important information and coping skills for risk reduction
Beyond Basics is conducted over the course of three sessions, and these brief, limited interventions prompt students to change their substance use patterns.
