Basics
Students participating in Basics will meet with a clinician for two sessions to review the online Alcohol and Drug Assessment (Infosoft). These meetings will help students determine their level of risk for problem drinking or substance abuse. Sessions are designed to help students identify and acknowledge risky behaviors. Students will participate in harm reduction agreements. The sessions will help students identify protective factors so that they can make healthy choices for success both in and out of the classroom.
An additional component of Basics is to return within four weeks for a follow-up session. During this follow-up interview, students will discuss progress on previous recommendations, review their record of use and discuss any changes they have made and the impact of those changes on their life. This will help students realistically evaluate their risks and gain a better understanding of what motivates behaviors related to the use of mind-altering substances. If further assistance is needed, appropriate referrals will be made that may include the Hartshorn Health Center, the Learning Assistance Program, the University Counseling Center, or other treatment options.
